The Taliban kept on pounding the trench and Cairns barked instructions into his radio, before turning to Adam Edwards. He said, 'Tell your OC that I've got two F-18s on their way in from a carrier. Better tell him to pass to all the lads that this is going to be a "danger-close" mission.'

Edwards, crouching down, crept over to Captain Will Clark, the troop OC and Sergeant David 'Taff' Morris, to pass on what the JTAC had just told him. Obviously the marines would be too close for the F-18s to use anything other than their 20mm M61 Gatling guns. Edwards went back to his position next to Captain Cairns and answered a call on his radio; the men on JTAC Hill asked if the marines were now firing back behind them, as they were taking incomers. He barely had time to realise that this meant there were Taliban to their rear when Captain Cairns shouted that the planes were on their final run in. Edwards clamped his hands over his ears, waiting for the blast.
